The Big Picture Alliance (BPA)

Rigoberto Garcia
Class of 2001, currently at Penn State
Plans to attend college, Major in Computer and Video/Film Production.

"I used to be reallly shy and didn't speak any English when I started in the BPA program. I got involved with the program because it sounded like a lot of fun and other kids were doing it. After starting in the program I realized that I'd have to learn to speak English. So I did."

The program improved my self-esteem a lot. At first, I didn't want to go to school, yet the BPA program made me feel like I could make it through school. So I figured "why not me?" That's when I started working a lot harder in school. I had never planned on going to college. I probably would have ended up working for a company that grows and sells mushrooms. But now, I want to produce and direct movies. I want to go to college and major in film/video production and computers. The BPA opened doors for me that would have never been open to me, had I not been involved with the BPA."

This are just some of the movies that the Big Pictures has work on.

One of the Movies that was done by Hispanic was Nuestra Vida
Nuestra Vida (Our Life) is our 3rd film with students from the Migrant Education class at Kennett Square High School. This time the students wanted to make a film about teenage Gangs. The story centers around the figure of Jaime; the popular leader of the Phantoms, a Mexican-American gang in the rural farm community of Kennett Square, near the Pennsylvania and Delaware border. He should feel good about himself. He has the respect of his friends; and Maria, his girl-friend, is the prettiest girl in town. But he's not happy. He must choose between continuing school and working in a mushroom farm, and whether or not to order the Phantoms to take up guns in self defense against the Scorpions, a rival gang. The climax is precipitated by the arrival of Juan, a new boy in town, whose innocent attempts to join the Phantoms sparks a love triangle, a moonlit gang fight, and a desperate flight from the law that leads to a siege at the gang's hideout, and Jaime's final decision whether to join society, or become an outlaw.

Nuestra Vida (Our Life) was selected to be shown at the 1998 Philadelphia Festival of World Cinema and the 1999 Nashville Film Festival. It received the Certificate of Merit in Open competition at the 1998 Chicago International Children's Film Festival

The Seekers fast forwards us to the year 2075, seventy years after The Great Blowup. The Great Blowup was a war of such devastating violence that both history and civilization lay buried in its wake. After the war the world lay silent for a long time. Then small groups of human survivors emerged who sought to recover the knowledge of a vanished civilization. They are called Seekers. The Seekers were bands of extraordinary young people chosen to undertake the journey to the fabled city of the Wise One, a woman of great age and incredible wisdom who holds the key to rebuilding civilization. The journey is dangerous, and many Seekers have lost their lives at the hands of the Mutants. The Mutants were offspring of City Dwellers. Between them and mankind there is war to the death. The Wise One is old, and knows her time is near. The Mutants have grown in strength and cunning. Only the Seekers can save the day.

The Seekers is our second film with students from North Philadelphia's Village prep school. It is laden with special effects, and has a musical score especially written for the film and selected at an interactive musical workshop by Cast members, and played by Philadelphia's celebrated Relache Ensemble.

The Seekers was selected to be shown at the Philadelphia Festival of World Cinema in May, 1999. The Seekers was awarded the Silver Plaque for Achievement in Special Effects at the 1999 INTERCOM Festival. The Seekers was selected to be shown at the 1999 Chicago International Children's Film festival.

Festival was shot in September 1995 in Kennett Square, PA., about 30 miles south of Philadelphia; and premiered at the Mexican Cultural Center's annual Christmas party at the Warwick Hotel in December 1996. Participating kids came from the Mexican American agri-business community; mainly workers in the local mushroom farms. Most kids attended the Mary D. Lang school in Kennett, and the Kennett Sq. Middle school. Festival took place over three intensive weekends (and some after-school afternoons).

The idea was to prepare a float to enter in the annual Mushroom Parade, a big event in Kennett; as well as for the Mexican-American community. (This was the first time in the history of the Mushroom festival that the Hispanic community was represented). In competition with more than 3 dozen other floats and a handful of professional floats; the BPA float came home with a Second Prize! The film is documentary in style. There was no prepared script. The kid's activities were divided between making the eight foot tall Puppets for the float, film instruction; operating the cameras during the parade, and participating in a Field Day family celebration on the last weekend. As the kids became more comfortable with the cameras, they took over the filming. Most of the parade footage was shot by kids.

Festival was selected for competition at the 1997 Chicago International Children's Film Festival.

La Broma was shot in the late Winter and early Spring of 1996 at the Kennett Square High School in Kennett Square, and premiered at St. Andrews Church in Kennett Square, in July 1996. The kids were drawn from the rolls of the Pennsylvania State Migrant Education program, and came from basically the same circumstance as the Kids in the "Festival" film; although slightly older. La Broma was what we call a "full" program. We started with instruction in camera and lighting, and rudiments of editing; then progressed to story telling, imagination and writing exercises, as well as acting and improvisation exercises. From this came the idea of a love story set against a background of alienation and cultural differences. (Initially the kids wanted to do a bloody Gang-war film. The Migrant Ed. people were not amused by this, and we had our first encounter with a rejected story-line). The kids improvised the situations and dialogue, then placed the scenes in logical dramatic order. The program caught fire as we began filming, and so many kids showed up that we had trouble fitting them in. This is why every character in the film seems to have two or three friends, all of whom have one line. We shot with 2 full camera crews, including lighting and sound technicians.

La Broma was awarded First Prize for Best Short Subject at the 1997 Chicago International Children's Film Festival; and was awarded the Silver Plaque for Student Narrative at Intercom, 1998. It was selected to be shown at the 1999 Nashville Film Festival.
